New Assassin's Creed Odyssey patch adds post-level 50 Mastery system

New Assassin's Creed Odyssey patch adds post-level 50 Mastery system

With its first DLC episode coming next week, Assassin's Creed Odyssey has received a major patch that adds a post-level 50 'Mastery' level to the game. This lets you spend ability points earned after that point on additional stat bonuses in a new menu screen, with each stat being linked to your three ability trees. It basically layers in more late game progression options, which I'm sure dedicated players will enjoy. Here's what that menu looks like:

You also have the ability to fast travel to mythical creatures in the game now, and the PC version specifically has a new option that lets you set Alexios and Kassandra's walking speed. The other tweaks are more granular:
- Added an option to dismantle items directly at Blacksmiths.
- Wearing the full set of a Legendary Armor now gives more powerful bonus than the version available for engraving.
- Addressed a display issue that caused Stats upgrades to appear downgraded after Level 50.
- The Child of Poseidon achievement/trophy will now unlock when conditions are met.
There's a whole host of other small fixes outlined on the Assassin's Creed subreddit. Assassin's Creed Odyssey's DLC is called Legacy of the First Blade, and the first episode arrives on December 4th, because the one thing this time sink of a game definitely needs right now is more content (I haven't quite found the time to finish Odyssey yet—each Assassin's usually takes me a few months of chipping away).

Where to find Fortnite's horrifying clown boards

Where to find Fortnite's horrifying clown boards

Clowns. You either hate them or you hate them. Some of them are pretty terrifying, so it's understandable if you feel the need to protect yourself with a weapon. In Fortnite, if you see someone with a clown skin, they're probably a demented super-builder, and we wouldn't blame you for running the other way. Some back when it's safe in Fortnite Season 7. It's almost here anyway.
Clowns are in Fortnite in a big way for the penultimate week of challenges in season six. Scattered around the map are a few Carnival Clown Boards which contain a mini-game that you must finish to unlock Battle Stars.
You can see where the Carnival Clown Boards are on our map below. To finish the challenge, you'll need to get a score of 10 or more. To do so, just interact with the board, and balloons will begin to inflate in the different holes on the board, kind of like whack-a-mole. Shoot or smack the balloons as they inflate to score a point for each, and enjoy your Battle Stars.

Breach is a competitive co-op dungeon crawler coming to Early Access

Breach is a competitive co-op dungeon crawler coming to Early Access

Asymmetrical, co-op dungeon crawler Breach will be appearing on Steam Early Access in January. It pits a squad of heroes against monsters from myth and their boss, a demonic dungeon master controlled by another player. Point your eyes at the trailer above.
In his Breach preview, Luke compared Breach to Shadowrun, in setting at least, thanks to the fusion of magic and mythology with the modern world. I’m getting a similar vibe, but I’m also reminded of the excellent and sometimes underappreciated MMO, The Secret World, now Secret World Legends. There’s the clash of magic and mundane, but there’s also the diverse classes that mix mystical and martial skills.
Perhaps you prefer the Elementalist, who calls down humongous meteors and earthquakes with interminably long casting times. Or the Gunslinger, who dumps clip after clip of molten lead into any unlucky fiend in their way. Or maybe you're looking for a swordsman that packs free-flowing aerial combat, Devil May Cry style, where you can keep an enemy propelled in the air through a constant juggle of physics-defying slashes. Or perhaps you want to try something truly off the wall, like the Lich, who hides a phylactery somewhere on the map and is essentially immortal until it's found and destroyed.
It’s the villain I’m most interested in, though. Veil demons are player-controlled bosses who can possess monsters, set up traps and generally cause problems for the adventurers traipsing through their dungeon. Who could blame them? I’d probably be a bit miffed if someone broke into my dismal lair, too.
Ahead of the Early Access launch, developer QC Games is hosting an extended technical alpha between November 30 and December 2. A new class will be available during the playtest, too. It’s called the Chronomancer, so expect wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff.
While Breach will be free-to-play eventually, you’ll need to pay for the Early Access version when it launches in January.

Wildstar has now closed, so here is some footage of its final moments

Wildstar has now closed, so here is some footage of its final moments

It feels like only yesterday that enthusiasm for Wildstar was at fever pitch. The action MMO attracted a great deal of pre-release hype, and Phil's review was pretty glowing. "Clever questing and a stand-out combat system make for an entertaining MMO that's as large as it is full of character," he wrote back in 2014.
News broke in September that the Carbine Studios developed MMO would close on November 28 (or November 29 in Australia), along with the studio. That's happened now, and as you'd expect, enduring fans of the game have marked the occasion on reddit. They might have done on the official Wildstar website too, but I can't confirm since that's already been shut down.
This video, uploaded by YouTube user Paul Buckley, shows one person's perspective of the closing minute. During the video, a Realm Broadcast reads the following: "This is your friendly reminder of TOTAL DESTRUCTION in 5 minutes. We hope that you have enjoyed your stay and accomplished your dreams, here on planet Nexus."
User kaossverige uploaded this video of "one last Wildstar conga". As you can see, the art style was really something.
It's always a sad moment when an MMO closes: communities and friendships blossom in these worlds, and due to their always online nature, there's no real way to retain or archive the experiences they provided. You can watch similar closing moments for Asheron's Call and Planetside
On Twitter, the official Wildstar account tweeted the following earlier today. "As of November 28 at 2pm PST, the North American and European WildStar game service has closed. Thank you to everyone who joined us on this grand adventure across the Nexus."

Hell Let Loose gameplay trailer showcases 'authentic' WWII combat (Updated)

Hell Let Loose gameplay trailer showcases 'authentic' WWII combat (Updated)

We haven't heard from the WWII multiplayer FPS Hell Let Loose since October 2017, when it launched a $100,000 Kickstarter to help get it across the finish line. It ended up drawing in more than double that amount, and today the developers announced that it will launch on Steam Early Access in 2019.
Hell Let Loose is a "realistic platoon-based" shooter built around 50v50 battles, "in which players must coordinate to capture sectors and resources to beat the opposition into submission," publisher Team17 said. "Authenticity is key, and players will be able to experience history using a realistic period arsenal, with accurate weapon behavior."
The trailer released today appears to reflect that approach. In contrast with the high-speed, over-the-top gameplay of Battlefield 5, the action in Hell Let Loose is slow, clunky, and ugly: You can't see a hell of a lot, and the kills in the trailer aren't the result of epic duels but of shooting guys in the back while their attention is focused elsewhere. "Realism" is a squishy concept in the context of videogames, but that seems pretty close to the mark as these things go.
Hell Let Loose is listed on Steam, and there's a website up at hellletloose.com, although there's not a whole lot to see there right now. Developer Black Matter said that "a roadmap of key content drops" will be posted when the Early Access release is live.

SteamVR update enables smoother gameplay and custom controller settings

SteamVR update enables smoother gameplay and custom controller settings

Valve has pulled a couple of interesting SteamVR features out of beta and incorporated them into the polished release, namely motion smoothing and improved support for mapping your own customer controller bindings. Both are now available in the latest SteamVR build, version 1.1.3.
"Today we've updated SteamVR for all users with changes that have been cooking in SteamVR beta for the last month. This includes major features like Motion smoothing and updates to the controller rebinding UI, as well as a host of new features, bug fixes, tweaks, and improvements across SteamVR. With this update we’ve also changed our versioning system from build IDs to dot releases. This will make it simpler for our users (and us) to refer back to different versions of SteamVR as we continue to add features and improvements," Valve says.
Let's start with motion smoothing. The ultimate goal with motion smoothing is to enable "more players on more PCs to play high-fidelity VR games and experiences." Similar to how a TV interpolates between two existing frames to create a new in-between frame, motion smoothing accomplishes the same thing, but in a different way.
"When SteamVR sees that an application isn’t going to make framerate (i.e. start dropping frames), motion smoothing kicks in. It looks at the last two delivered frames, estimates motion and animation, and extrapolates a new frame. Synthesizing new frames keeps the current application at full framerate, advances motion forward, and avoids judder," Valve explains.
Motion smoothing effectively locks the framerate at 45 fps on a 90Hz headset (when it kicks in, or if flipping the 'Always-On' switch), since it's only actually rendering one out of every two frames, and synthesizing the rest. This approach "dramatically" lowers the performance requirements without adding latency, according to Valve.
"From the player’s perspective, what was previously a game that would hitch and drop frames producing judder is now a game that constantly runs smoothly at 90Hz... Not only can lower-end GPUs now produce smooth frames in applications that were previously too expensive, higher-end GPUs can now render at an even higher resolution increasing the fidelity of all experiences on all VR systems," Valve says.
While motion smoothing is now out of beta, support is still limited—it only works with the Vive and Vive Pro on Windows 10 systems with an Nvidia GPU.
Support for rebinding controller input has also been added to the latest public SteamVR build. It includes the following changes/additions:
  • The binding UI is now available on the desktop under the Devices menu in SteamVR.
  • The controller binding UI now enables users to rename actions for applications which do not yet have native SteamVR Input support.
  • The controller binding UI also enables users to to create simulated actions for trigger pulls or trackpad clicks.
This should prove a boon for developers, who can "adapt their games more easily to diverse controllers." Importantly, developer can offer alternate control schemes without having to change the games themselves. And since support is baked directly into SteamVR, mapping custom controls is not dependent on developers updating their apps.
Beyond the two feature updates, the latest version of SteamVR introduces a whole bunch of bug fixes and general improvements.

Outcast: Second Contact is free to download for a few days

Outcast: Second Contact is free to download for a few days

The Humble Store is in the midst of its big Fall Sale, and as it sometimes does it's got a free game up for grabs for the next couple of days. This time around it's Outcast: Second Contact, which is yours for the taking until 10 am Pacific on November 24.

Released in 2017, Outcast: Second Contact is a remake of the 1999 Infogrames action-adventure about a US Navy SEAL named Cutter Slade (yes, seriously) who escorts a group of scientists to an alien world to help shut down a black hole that's threatening the Earth. Things very quickly go off the rails, as they do, and Cutter ends up in the midst of a civilizational struggle that also somehow involves time travel.

Black Friday deals: see all the best offers right now!
It's weird, yes, but also very good: It won numerous awards when it was new, including Computer Gaming World's "Adventure of the Year", and the remake earned an 82/100 review from us last year.

You'll need to subscribe to the Humble newsletter if you're not already signed up, but that seems like a reasonable trade-off for a good game at no cost. Unlike most Humble offerings, the Outcast: Second Contact freebie is also a DRM-freebie, so instead of a Steam key you'll receive a direct download link. It will only be available until 10 am Pacific on November 29, however, after which "the download will magically vanish as if it were just a figment of your imagination," so grab it while you can.

‘God of War’ Director Reportedly Working On Something Much Bigger

‘God of War’ Director Reportedly Working On Something Much Bigger

Ever since its release earlier this year, God of War has been heralded as one of the best action games out there, period. And you can thank director Cory Barlog and his team, who have put in tireless effort to make it shine the way it did. But apparently, that’s just the beginning for what the team has in mind.
Director Duncan Jones, who worked on such movies as The Source Code and the big-screen adaptation of Warcraft, recently had a chance to meet up with Barlog, and the two had a lot to talk about, as you can see from their Twitter responses.
While the duo could use more, ahem, “selfie work,” there’s no question he knows a thing or two about game directing. And something bigger is apparently on the way.

On a positive note, @corybarlog turns out to be as sweet, thoughtful & intelligent as I’d grown to think he is from our online interactions. And if you think that God of War is his magnum opus, just you wait!

The interesting part of that quote is “if you think that God of War is his magnum opus, just you wait!”, which indicates that the team is already planning its next project. Now the real question is...what is it? Are we getting a sequel to God of War for the PlayStation 5? Are we getting a reboot of Twisted Metal? Or perhaps something entirely original.
Neither Jones nor Barlog are saying, and probably won’t for some time, as whatever this project may be is still early in the works. But knowing how well God of Warturned out, it’s likely to shine just as brightly -- if not brighter.

For now, though, you can enjoy what Barlog’s masterpiece has to offer, as God of War is available for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro. In fact, you can get the game for as low as $17 with this weekend’s Black Friday sales. And for that price, well, you’ll get a meaty adventure for your buck. And well worth it, might we add.

Best Destiny 2: Forsaken Collection Black Friday 2018 Deals (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

Best Destiny 2: Forsaken Collection Black Friday 2018 Deals (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

Alright, alright, alright! Black Friday deals are on the horizon.

If you've been keeping track of our coverage ahead of Black Friday 2018, then you know there are plenty of deals to take advantage of now that the big day is here. We've got another tip for those looking to give Destiny 2 a chance, and after the recent Forsaken expansion, now is the best time to jump into Bungie's online shooter. At the beginning of sale, you can expect to find the Destiny 2: Forsaken Collection on discount from major retailers.
Destiny 2: Forsaken Legendary Collection will be on sale for as little as $30 at Target if you're interested in the PS4 or Xbox One versions. On PC, Battle.net drops it to $39. No matter the platform, this gets you the complete Destiny 2 experience to this point, including the great Forsaken expansion that released in September, along with the previous DLC packs.
Bungie's online game has seen a number of updates during its first year, and the recent Forsaken expansion is where it finally hit its stride. In addition to a brand new story where you'll have to exact revenge for the death of Cayde-6, you'll be able to acquire a new set of powers and gear for your character, while also exploring an entirely new setting in the form of the Dreaming City. Destiny 2: Forsaken has also increased the amount of weekly events you can take part in. Instead of the standard bounties and repeats of previous missions, unexpected encounters and new story events happen in much greater frequency--gradually expanding the universe. Recently, Destiny 2 saw the return of the exotic Thunderlord machine-gun, one of the more powerful weapons from Destiny 1.
In GameSpot's Destiny 2: Forsaken review, reviews editor Kallie Plagge stated: "There is a lot to do in Forsaken, so much so that it can be difficult to see it all. That also means that, for the average player, this expansion has a much longer tail than previous iterations of Destiny 2. The variety and flexibility of activities established in the base game still work to make grinding a good time, and Gambit adds a consistently entertaining mode to the roster. The endgame, while difficult to reach, is also where the most satisfaction can be found."

During Black Friday 2018, you'll be able to find several games with solid discounts from several outlets including PlayStation Store (discount available now), Best BuyTarget, and Walmart. These titles include Assassin's Creed OdysseyFallout 4: Game of the Year Edition, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. While you can see what will be able on sale once the retailer event begins, you won't be able to act on them at this time. For now, it's a good way to plan ahead and focus on what games and consoles you'll want to buy.
There's still plenty more deals to see with Black Friday 2018 on the horizon. At this time, deals won't be active until the sales kicks off, so make a note of which ones strike your fancy. Be sure to keep up with our deals page to see more of what's to come with big retailer event, and what deals we've added into our roundup.
