Android Q is the upcoming 10th major release of the Android mobile operating system developed by Google. The Android Q OS is still on its beta phase and doesn't have a code name yet, the final stable update is scheduled to be released in third quarter of 2019 (probably August). The main highlights of Android Q updates as seen on Google blog and Android Developer blog are the following:
- Native support for foldable phones
- New gestures
- Dark mode
- New and improved UI customizations with changeable themes, icons and fonts (in Stock Android)
- Allows users to control when apps have permission to see their location: never, only when the app is in use (running), or all the time (when in the background).
- New permissions to access in background photos, video, and audio files
- Built-in screen recorder
- Background apps can no longer jump into the foreground.
- Improved privacy: limited access to non-resettable device identifiers
- Sharing shortcuts, which allow sharing content with a contact directly
- Floating settings panel, that allow changing system settings directly from apps
- Dynamic depth format for photos, which allow changing background blur after taking a photo
- Support for the AV1 video codec, the HDR10+ video format, and the Opus audio codec
- A native MIDI API, allowing interaction with music controllers
- Better support for biometric authentication in apps
- Support for the WPA3 Wi-Fi security protocol
The lineup of devices who received the Android Q beta update first are the Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL devices. To those other Android devices, you can see the list of all expected devices which will receive Android Q update this 2019.
The brands included in the list of supported smartphones and devices for Android Q (Android 10) update are Google, Asus, BlackBerry, BQ, Essential, General Mobile, HTC, Huawei, Honor, Infinix, Kyocera, LG, Mara Phone, Motorola, Nokia, OnePlus, Oppo, Razer, Realme, Samsung, Sharp, Sony Xperia, Tecno, Vivo, and Xiaomi.
Google's Pixel devices are always the first ones to receive the official Android updates especially the Android Q update.
With Android updates, Asus hasn't always been consistent. However, At Zenfone 6 launch, Asus promised Android Q update for the device.
For the past years, BlackBerry updated their devices slowly, even if it manages to remain on top of safety updates. The BlackBerry Key2 has been verified on its update route to get Android Q, but you're likely still waiting for Android Pie.
BQ is a Spanish phone manufacturer and is known for using Android Stock UI, as such it retains the unmodified "Google Experience". Phones under BQ who are expected to get Android Q update are its Aquaris X2 series which were bundled with Android One OS.
Essential Phone is known in bringing pure Android experience with stock Android OS. Essential is on the Q beta list, so it will be updated-and Essential is basically updated to Android Pie the day after it was released to Pixel phones. We would expect this phone to be updated quickly.
General Mobile, abbreviated as 'GM', is a Turkish smartphone brand launched in 2015, focused on bringing pure Android experience to its customer by presenting the latest and the most secure Android version.
HTC is a Taiwanese consumer electronics company founded in 1997, which began as an original design manufacturer and original equipment manufacturer, designing and manufacturing laptop computers. Its well known lineup of smartphone is the HTC U series.
Amidst the Huawei ban controversy, the company says that the following 17 devices are already approved for Android Q and is in the beta program. The update on all these models is expected to be part of the EMUI 10 update.
Honor is a smartphone sub-brand owned by Huawei, which is known to provide smartphone handsets targeting young consumers. Following Huawei's promise of OS update to its customers, Honor also reassures that it will continue to offer warranties and updates to its phones, as they commit to provide Android update to its Honor 20 series.
Infinix Mobile is a Hong Kong-based smartphone manufacturer founded in 2013, known for offering affordable yet quality smartphones.
Kyocera is a smartphone brand based on Japan, and usually a partner of Ymobile (subsidiary of Japanese telecommunications company SoftBank). Kyocera phones released from 2017 are bundled with Android One OS, so they are getting the 2 year OS update advantage from Google.
LG is pretty slow in updating its phones, but the flagship phone LG G8 is on the Android Q beta, so its likely to receive an update.
Mara Phone is a well known smartphone brand in African countries. Its Mara Z phone is designed in partnership with Google's Android One Program, bringing simple, secure and smart Android experience with the latest version of Android especially the Android Q.
Motorola has been acquired by Lenovo in 2014, since then, its OS updates has been quite slow. But it promised to bring updates to its Android One devices, available in some areas.
Nokia's history with OS updates is good, since the company is a Google-partnered smartphone. Most of its devices are powered by Android One OS, so they're usually first in line when receiving updates, just like in Android Pie and expected to be the same with the upcoming Android Q.
OnePlus is really good and fast when it comes to releasing the latest update for its devices especially on its flagship phones.
Oppo is one of the biggest smartphone maker in China. Though its new to global markets, the company is dedicated in bringing Android updates. Its flagship phone Oppo Reno is in the Android Q beta list, so it is expected to get the final version.
Razer hasn't released any news yet regarding Android Q update with its flagship phone.
Realme is the budget brand of Oppo and although it's just getting started in its global march, it's also on the Android Q beta, so there's some hope for a rapid update.
Samsung doesn't update its phone rapidly. Its own One UI has just rolled out bringing Android Pie, so it is expected not to receive Android 10 Q on its devices until the Galaxy S11 is launched in 2020. Don't anticipate any updates until March 2020.
Sharp is a Japanese smartphone manufacturer known for releasing phones installed with Android One OS, which supports android updates.
Sony's record on OS updates isn't good, but its 2018 flagship phone Xperia XZ3 in the list of Q beta supported devices, so we can expect to get the final Android Q update.
Tecno Mobile is a Chinese mobile phone manufacturer which is based in Hong Kong. It has strong markets in Africa, Middle East and Southeast Asia. Its TECNO SPARK 3 Pro was included in the Android Q beta program which is expected to get the final version also.
Some of Vivo phones are on the list of Android Q beta program, so that's an assurance that the following devices will definitely get the final update.
Xiaomi is serious in bringing Android Q update, as its two devices were listed in the Android Q beta, which is definitely to receive the final update. Its Android One devices were expected to get the update too. Pocophone and range of Xiaomi devices have also been confirmed to receive Android Q.
Once the Android Q final update was released, we will update this post. For local phones like Cherry Mobile and MyPhone, there's still no news whether they were going to update their flagship phones.
